SECONDARY EDUCATION

Thirty years ago, I failed at school. Since then, washing lines and roller blinds have taught me all I need to know of pulleys – more than ever Mr Roberts (maths) was able. I’ve found that sound is energy, as every tug resisted turns to squeak.       I sort the clothes in sets, but socks still disappear through worm holes in the wash or wrap themselves in m??bius chains (though less so, now I’ve mastered static electricity and use conditioner).       No doubt Miss Jones (domestic science? history?) would be proud of my monarchial skills: I can tell King Edward…

NEMO IN HOT WATER

In a dramatic raid on Disney partner Pixar Studios, Coral Reef Animation Police (CRAP) arrested Nemo, star of the phenomenally successful Finding Nemo, for three counts of public mischief. A CRAP spokesperson said the arrest stemmed from three questionable situations depicted in the film — Nemo’s upbringing, the maintenance of a warm saltwater aquarium, and the anatomy of a baleen whale. Nemo was unavailable for comment but lawyers for Disney and Pixar said, “It’s just a story. We never said we were training marine biologists.” The first incident occurs early in the film, when an unnamed predatory fish devours the…

THE LONELY STRUGGLE OF THE POLITICIZED ARTEMIA SALINA*

This pool, this salty shrine, This place from whence all good things come — This is my home. Like all of you, I bask and breed And swim from day to day; I juggle eggs and food, Absorb the sunlight when I can, And rarely take the time to think and brood Upon that larger world, This gulf ‘twixt shrimp and man. But now, at last, I rise to speech and action, Driven by injustice grave and dark. For evil doth intrude upon our tranquil pond, And must no longer pass thus unremarked. “Sea Monkeys,” humans say, and in so…

THE BOOK OF THWILE: A CHILDREN’S BOOK

“Praying to those deities in the sky, Can never account for the chickens that die “Stuffed in small cages with no room to run They squeeze out your breakfast and croak when they’re done! “all day you recline on this mattress of fluff, When you barely acknowledge what gives you this stuff… DOWNLOAD THE BOOK HERE (pdf ~15Mb)

CICATRIX

When I would see her thin chart full of medical fluff perched upon the door I’d take a deep breath and relax before heading in. Hers were easy visits. Colds, allergies, acne. Sometimes we’d end her appointment talking about her college. Had she picked a major yet? Did she lead the soccer team in goals this year? But as I opened the door to the examining room that day I could smell the bottled air within was tainted with misery. Tears, snot, and even her cold sweat drifted in the small space, and as I sat down there was really…

IN THE DOG HOUSE

My Very Excellent Mother used to be the soul of generosity, and her beneficence a universally-acknowledged truth. Around the world, students rejoiced when they recalled that she Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas. But as time passes, so it seems, the universe contracts; mom’s liberality is capped and scientists decree that students will make do with Nothing. Supperless I’m banished to my room. I must redo my fourth grade science project.
